We like Ike! Disney’s ad for Eisenhower

Sunday 27th July 2008 - 10:50:31 AM

Dwight Eisenhower was the first president to embrace the televised political advertisement. Says the Sociological Images Blog, “Eisenhower was skeptical about using television and his opponent, Stevenson, wouldn’

t appear on television because he thought it demeaning to a man ascending to the presidency. Eisenhower won.” Of course, we know that Stevenson learned his lesson, producing this little number the next time around.

Here’s a joyous little Disney animated Eisenhower ad. After seeing this, how could you not like Ike?

You never see political ads this fun anymore. I demand more animated elephants with the faces of the candidates plastered on the side! Actually the cartoon Eisenhower looks a bit like John McCain so with some clever editing one might be able to update this ad for today. The jingle will be the hard bit. “In McCain our confidence will not wane”? “McCain will bring on the pain”? “McCain, our Constitution he will not stain”? [via boingboing]
