If the winner of The Cold War was going to be determined by who had the most awesome looking new technology, I think the Ruskies would have been miles ahead of us. You know Sputnik looked sweet, but what about this lesser known project, EPIK. This flying saucer like aircraft was being designed in secret laboratories at labor camps. I’m pretty sure all Americans would have collectively “oopsed” their pants if they saw a bunch of Soviets piloting these things. They didn’t manage to get one off the ground until the early 90’s, which you can see about 4 minutes into this video:

Wired did a story a few years back about the continued attempts to get these things made.
